Late Bloomin' Gamer

New Year, New Inspirations

Last night I had the pleasure of joining a beginners game of Daggerheart. Aside from having a lot of fun and stretching my TTRPG skills (which are VERY lacking still), one thing that truly impressed me was how deeply the Game Master (GM) had knowledge of the realm. He was a master story teller, and had deep knowledge of the lore/realm the game was taking place in, as well as everything about each of our pre-generated characters.

Heck, he even spent the entire weekend making a map for our game, though he did find a map in the book hours after finishing the map. Now that is dedication!

This has inspired me to read more GM guides to learn how to craft my adventure in such a way.

I also realized I was going about this entirely wrong. I was trying to force a story onto this when I should have been creating a sandbox to play in with loose guidelines. I've only GM'd one time, and I did a horrible job at it from a narrative perspective (though my kids had a good time, so I guess it wasn't too bad). I need to learn that craft before I can make a coherent adventure.

I still have much to learn. And I promise I'm not only using this as an excuse to just buy/read more RPG books! They're....uh....research!
