Late Bloomin' Gamer

Childlike Wonder

Welcome one and all in today's ramblings on my meandering road to making my TTRPG.

Over the weekend my kids went over to my mom's house for their weekly "play at grammy's and get as much junk food as we ask for" time.

My youngest brought along a game he made over Christmastime last year while we were traveling to Germany for the holiday. The game he made? His own spin on Dungeons and Dragons. Not actually DnD compatible, just the game as he understood it with a different name. Complete with map, DM shield, and character sheets we made over there.

Him and his older brother played that game a lot while we were there on vacation during downtime, and they had a good time. No built in story, no general idea. Just random encounters and fluctuating rules with what little story they tried to tack on making no sense.

Yes, my youngest kid is further along with his game design than I am.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I should just take his approach though. Ignore the story part and build the world for now, and tack on the story later. That might be a more "me" approach anyway. I just need to tap into that side of my brain. Or just copy my kid's maps and re-name the locations.

Also, part of me is thinking "Should I Kickstarter his game?" But then I realize that'd be stealing from my kid, so I'm going to hold off on that bit for at least two more weeks.
